The slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” was coined by former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Evolution
At the time of independence India did not have enough food to feed its population. Its economy was also not so strong to purchase the same. Additionally, it had to invest in basic industrial development for the growth. Thus it was dependent on foreign aid for basic requirements. This has limited its bargaining power at international platform especially with America. Further, China war in 1962 required to focus on strengthening of military. Against such a backdrop it was necessary to promote the farming as well defence community. Hence, the slogan.
Significance
It fuelled new energy to the two sectors. Foundation of green revolution resulted in more than self-sufficiency in its food needs. At the same time, it boosted the confidence of our defence forces. Victory over Pakistan in 1965 was one of its significant output. Later on, India progressed significantly in its strategic and security capacity building.
