Causes
- Zamindar enhanced rents above legal rate
- They blocked issue of occupancy rights to peasants/cultivators under Bengal Tenancy Act -1859
Characteristics
- Payment of extra rent resisted; rents withheld
- Formed agrarian leagues – collected fund for litigation
- Legal recourse – developed awareness of law and legal rights
- Peaceful agitation- little violence
- Support from intelligentsia – Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and RC dutt
- Not Anti-British campaign – also not against zamindari system – hence, did not receive suppressive treatment during legal battle or peaceful protests
- Hindu-Muslim unity
Outcomes
- Zamindar – came to early positions – high litigation cost
- Bengal Tenancy Act passed – 1885
