Unit Factor

If \(x = y\), then \(x \over y \) = 1 and \(y \over x\) = 1

Here, \(x \over y \) and \(y \over x \) are unit factors which are equal to unity.

To convert a measurement from one unit into another, we multiply the given measurement by a unit factor.  We chose such a unit factor whose denominator is the given unit and numerator is the target unit.

We use unit factors for following types of unit conversions:

  1. One prefix to another prefix of the same unit
  2. One basic unit to another basic unit
  3. One derived unit to another derived unit
