Why did Mughal Empire fail?

Mughal Empire was spread across  almost entire India region. It started to break in 18th century. various reasons for its fall are as follows:

  • Aurangzeb failed to accommodate the rising regional aspirations of Maratha and others
  • drainage of resources in fights with Marathas, foreign invaders and in wars of succession weekend the regime financially.
  • multilevel exploitation resulted in stagnated agriculture and  impoverishment. Law and order problems escalated.
  • religious orthodoxy adopted by the then Mughal king alienated the Hindu rulers
  • corruption weakened the administrative structures. It created loopholes which british exploited.
  • overemphasis on farming revenue and neglect of overseas trade and scientific developments in industries prevented the creation of wealth much needed in changing world
  • absence of political nationalism among people. They were loyal to persons, castes and communities.

Lack of political wisdom in Mughal policies and absence of a long-term vision in rapidly changing world led to collapse of the Empire.
